What Overthinking can feel like
Many people describe overthinking as feeling stuck inside their own thoughts.
You might find yourself replaying conversations, worrying about what you said, or imagining everything that could go wrong. Even small decisions can feel exhausting because your mind keeps analysing every possibility. Your confidence is low and you keep thinking of worse case scenarios.
Over time this can leave you feeling mentally drained and unable to switch off.
Why our minds start overthinking
Overthinking usually develops as a coping strategy, a way of protecting ourselves.
If you've experienced criticism, threats, uncertainty or stressful situations in the past, your mind may have learned to constantly scan for problems or mistakes. The intention is often to stay safe or prepared, but instead if can create a cycle where thoughts spiral and anxiety grows.
The link between anxiety and overthinking
Overthinking and anxiety often go together. When we feel anxious, the mind tries to solve the problem by thinking harder and harder about it. Unfortunately this rarely brings clarity, instead it keeps the mind stuck in loops of worry.
Many people come to counselling because they feel exhausted by this constant mental activity.
How counselling can help with overthinking
Counselling offers a space to slow things down and look at these thought patterns more calmly. Rather than trying to force these thoughts away, therapy can help you;
understand the triggers for the cycle of overthinking
recognise when overthinking starts
develop a more balanced relationship with your thoughts
feel less overwhelmed by constant mental abuse
stop the worst case scenario thinking which has too much of a grip on you
Over time many people find they can step back from their thoughts rather than their thoughts dominating them.
